Welcome!
This is the introduction to your home-study course entitled Clinical Supervision of Psychotherapy, twelve units of continuing education approved by the American Psychological Association. This coursework meets the criteria cited in Arizona Revised Statutes Title 32, Chapter 33, Articles 1-8 that became effective in July, 2004. This training entitles the supervisor to offer ‘licensure-quality’ clinical supervision hours to supervisees seeking State licensure as professional counselors, social workers, marriage and family counselors, and substance abuse counselors.
Please read this two-page document carefully in order to complete the coursework and pass the examination that will generate 12 units of continuing education.
This is the entire course created by Carlton F. “Perk” Clark, a licensed clinical social worker, presented in 1990, 2004, and 2005. It combines a detailed examination of the Arizona State law pertaining clinical supervision and offers one specific method of clinical supervision that is drawn from an extensive literature search of the topic.
Mr. Clark has been part of a clinical supervision group that meets bi-monthly since 1982. He has been a clinical supervisor in public behavioral health treatment programs, with private groups and individual psychotherapists, and has worked with clinical supervisors who have been mandated by the licensing Board to receive remedial supervision training and experience. He has received Approved Clinical Supervisor status thorough the Center for Credentialing and Education, Inc. His resume is available at http://www.psychod.com
Clinical supervision is, like psychotherapy, only effectively learned by being an active apprentice, by presenting ones current cases to a supervisor, and by supervising other clinicians. This training offers only the didactic material necessary to make such an apprentice process more productive and comprehensive. It is hoped the material will catalyze your efforts to actively learn and practice competent clinical supervision to better-assist your supervisees and their clients to accomplish the essence of their psychotherapy goals.
The Course
The coursework is organized in a series of modules (.pdf files), on the pertinent Arizona law and on the basics of clinical supervision, as drawn from the fields of social work, psychology, psychiatry, and counseling. Slideshows, handouts, and papers on clinical supervision outline in detail the information most critical for a supervisor to learn.
